Recently we created these stunning tile portraits for the Macchiavelli restaurant in Covent Garden.

We painted three completely original portraits plus we digitally recreated six others from Renaissance originals. The paintings were then produced onto high fired ceramics and installed as table tops and wall coverings throughout the restaurant.

In my Melbourne studio I split the day creating art in the form of painting and designing in the form of the tile and wallpaper work. In previous collections I would at times use a painted image to form the basis of a tile or wallpaper design but apart from that there has been little connection between the two. Now however these two practices have crossed paths and I find myself painting on the surface of my wallpaper, using it like I would a canvas and intervening in the pattern.

I intend to develop these into individual artworks so that they can be pasted on to a wall as they are or framed. Alternatively they could be installed as unique drops within the pattern repeat, as if the painting has been done directly on your walls. Ideally customers would be able to choose from a limited edition of painted wallpaper drops to add to their order of the standard pattern. Interior Designers/Architects would then have the creative freedom to place the artwork in the space.

Taking the painted surface back to the digital from where it originated, I have edited some close-up images of the Gato1 intervention in Photoshop to create new patterns. These can now be used as floor tiles, wall tiles or wallpaper patterns in their own right. Below shows an image combining all these Gato painted patterns.

Every tile used had been either a factory reject or had been recycled from old projects and we utilised almost all our rejected tiles that had been gathering over the years to form a kaleidoscopic patchwork effect. London customers wanting to see our tiles in action, get down to Broadway Market, Hackney.

Located within Mood Stockholm a boutique like shopping mall in central Stockholm, the work was installed in three themed restrooms using a mix of the latest work plus older editions.

The aim was to create a place that was unlike any other in Stockholm and surely much of the world.

This year’s new collection features creepy crawlies hidden within intricate patterns and swirling lines.

After a five year absence from 100% Design, Dominic Crinson exhibits his new collection, “Original Species”. A series of designs fused together to create an explosion of pattern, colour and miniature entities. A truly primordial experience!

The Collection title “Original Species” is a play on Darwin’s epochal text  The Origin of the Species and features prey and predator poised and entangled in a web of pattern.

Sir David also selected the Londonscape and the Newyorkscape for the suites. The designs were then transformed into a large tile murals which were installed in the luxurious penthouse ensuite bathrooms.

The Beijingscape design features a montage of some of Beijing’s most glorious landmarks including the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, hutongs and more modern features including the Olympic stadium and skyscrapers.

The Beijingscape in situ, the mural wraps itself around the back wall of the ensuite with mirrors filling the rest of the space.

Dominic’s Londonscape design was used to great effect across the wall of this large ensuite that resembles a window overlooking a fantasy London.

Sir David Tang was impressed by Dominic’s Londonscape mural seen on a tour of the Boundary Hotel by Sir Terence Conran and subsequently got in touch to work with Dominic on a series of Penthouse suites. Sir David being an avid collecter and designer himself had outfit an entire suite in the Boundary in his luxurious modern Chinoiserie style (view images).

Dominic Crinson’s large tile mural provides a fantasy view over London and is a major talking point in the “Young British Design” suite. On the 2nd of November Sir Terence Conran will receive the Outstanding Contribution Award at the European Hotel Design Awards 2009.

Sir Terence Conran comments, “Boundary is my first new private venture since the opening of Bibendum in 1987. From finding the site to finalising all of the design details, including selecting the art and designing the garden, it is something that gives me enormous pleasure.”

“One of the most interesting elements has been the developing the individual concepts for each of the seventeen bedrooms. This has allowed me to create spaces inspired by designers and design movements that I most admire.”

For your own private vista over London with all the best landmarks in one spectacular montage, step into the enormous wet room in the “Young Designer’s Suite” in this most inspiring of hotels.

Sir Terence sought local produce by designers who had make a huge contribution to Shoreditch an area now knowns as London’s creative hub. And who could have been more local than Dominic Crinson who for 15 years lived and worked in the warehouse next to the once derelict building that is now the luxurious Boundary Hotel. Dominic’s Redchurch Street showroom was one of the first on the street that has been recently named as London’s Best New Shopping Street, by Time Out.

The Boundary Project is also nominated for the Best Conversion and for the Best Bathroom Interior. We obviously believe they should scoop the latter of the two, that’s for sure!
